of shipmates in order to enable members to maintain contact with other
shipmates; and to perpetuate the memory and accomplishments of deceased

Mario
is originally from El Paso, Texas. After graduating from boot camp at
the Balboa Park Naval Training Center in San Diego, California in
1961, his orders were to report to the 7th Fleet flagship The USS SAINT
PAUL CA-73.
The transport ship USS General W.A. Mann AP112 took him and others to
Subic Bay, NAVAL BASE Republic of the Philippines. From there an
Airline Transport tracked the USS SAINT PAUL CA-73 throughout
Westpac. After several weeks of flying back and forth, Mario finally
boarded the SHIP at its home port of Yokosuka, Japan. The
"Fighting Saint" became his home from 1961 to 1965.
After 4 years and 4 months (four month extension due to the Cuban
Crisis) in the Navy, Mario C. Chavez attended the University of Texas at
El Paso majoring in Business Administration. He later worked
for The El Paso Times, Inc., and stayed with the newspaper company for
30 years.

Mario C. Chavez is the author of the popular novel
“The Kids on the Block,” and is working on a new novel titled,
“Will Write for Food.”
